Spar Girona defeats Casademont Zaragoza at Fontajau

Spar Girona secured another victory at Fontajau after defeating Casademont Zaragoza in a game marked by intensity and key moments of dominance by the home team. Roberto Íñiguez’s squad started strong, capitalizing on their offensive efficiency and solid defense to build an early lead. Despite Zaragoza’s attempts to fight back, Uni maintained control of the game, led by an inspired Bibby and Mack’s presence in the paint, sealing a valuable win in Round 27 of the LF Endesa with a final score of 82-69.

Casademont Zaragoza started with a zone defense, forcing Spar Girona to focus their early attacks in the paint. Lundquist scored on two drives, while Hristova added points from the free-throw line (6-0). Zaragoza responded with their first points from Mawuli and tightened their interior defense, pushing Spar to look for perimeter solutions. Bibby and Hristova capitalized with three-pointers (12-2). Cantero quickly adjusted, finding success through inside plays by Fraser and Mack (14-6). However, the visitors’ tactical shift was short-lived. Girona’s strong defense and efficient scoring from Mack and Hristova forced Cantero to call another timeout (18-6). Despite a new basket from Mack (her sixth point), Casademont improved defensively and shifted the game’s momentum with a 2-7 run, closing the gap (20-13). Íñiguez responded with a similar strategy, and although Uni improved ball movement, they struggled to finish plays. Helena Oma took advantage, hitting a three-pointer to bring Zaragoza within three points (20-17). After multiple attempts, Touré answered from beyond the arc, but another play by Oma closed the quarter at 23-20.

At the start of the second quarter, Spar improved their shooting with a three-pointer from Ainhoa and key plays from Pierre-Louis and Bibby, though Zaragoza kept up with three-pointers from Mané and Oma (30-26). The game turned into a free-throw exchange, where Spar gained the upper hand with points from Mack, Bibby, a 2+1 from Bobi, and two free throws from Lundquist (38-27). Looking to extend their lead, Girona increased the pace, with an assist from Hristova to Mack and a Tate basket pushing the score to 42-27. However, Mawuli’s accuracy allowed Zaragoza to close the gap, forcing Íñiguez to call a timeout with 50 seconds left in the half (42-33). In the final moments, both teams struggled to score, and the game reached halftime with the same score.

After the break, Uni responded to Mawuli’s free throws with a three-pointer from Bibby (45-35). The Fontajau crowd grew restless over several uncalled fouls, but the team stayed focused, accelerating the pace with baskets from Klara, Hristova, and a 2+1 from Mack (52-37). Natasha Mack continued to dominate inside, scoring to give Girona their biggest lead of the game (54-37), but a three-pointer from Oma and a basket from Fraser put Casademont back in contention (54-42). Although Bibby and Klara added more points for Uni, Zaragoza kept pushing and reduced the deficit to just nine points, led by Fraser and Oma (61-52). Canella momentarily stopped Zaragoza’s momentum, but Nystrom answered with another three-pointer (63-55).

With Carol extending the lead back to double digits, Casademont’s dominance on the offensive boards created second-chance opportunities, allowing Flores to score (65-57). However, Uni responded with a crucial 6-0 run, fueled by a three-pointer from Bibby and a 2+1 from Canella (71-57). Bibby, eager for more, struck again from long range and, in the blink of an eye, stole the ball for an easy score (74-61). The Australian forward remained flawless from the free-throw line, but a 2-6 run from Zaragoza prompted Íñiguez to call a timeout with 1:59 remaining (78-63). Brcaninovic scored for the visitors, but Mack, securing an offensive rebound, restored Uni’s 14-point advantage (80-66), sealing Spar Girona’s victory with a final score of 82-69.
