Roberto Íñiguez, suspended for seven games: Spar Girona analyzes the situation

The Competition Committee has imposed a seven-game suspension and a €350 fine on Roberto Íñiguez, head coach of Spar Girona. Additionally, the club has been fined €500 due to scoreboard issues during Sunday’s match against Valencia. This decision is a significant setback for the Girona team.

In response to this sanction, the club’s president, Cayetano Pérez, and club secretary, Màrius Mora, held a press conference this morning to assess the situation. “We believe this is completely disproportionate given the facts stated in the report,” said Cayetano Pérez during his speech to the media. Meanwhile, Màrius Mora stated, “We have checked and in the last two years in the ACB or any FEB competition, there has not been such a severe sanction.”

The club emphasizes that the report does not include “any insults or aggression that would justify this type of sanction” and that they have 10 working days to file an appeal with the appeals tribunal. “We believe that the incidents recorded in the report warrant a suspension of 1 to 4 games,” added the secretary, contrasting the documented facts with the punishment: “The infraction corresponds to a sanctionable act ranging from 5 to 15 games.”

“We were aware that the incidents were sanctionable, and we will fight as much as possible,” acknowledged the president, adding: “It is a disadvantage for us that the coach is not on the court.” “We feel affected, but we believe the competition committee is neutral and must assess the facts presented in the report,” stated Cayetano Pérez.

Íñiguez will not make any public statements until the case is resolved and will travel with the team to Salamanca, where Jordi Sargatal will coach from the bench.
