Final victory at Fontajau before the FIBA break

Spar Girona secured another victory at Fontajau after defeating Lointek Gernika 73-62. By the end of the third quarter, the Girona side seemed to have the win under control, but mistakes in the final minutes and Gernika’s dominance on the offensive rebound gave the visitors a lifeline, quickly closing the gap to under 10 points in the last period (62-54). Finally, decisive points from Bibby and free throws from Caldwell and Lundquist helped Uni secure their fifteenth victory in the LF Endesa.

Spar Girona’s fast transition game earned them the first points of the match through Bibby and Klara (4-2). In the blink of an eye, Gernika responded with a 6-0 run thanks to two consecutive three-pointers from Olaeta (4-10). However, Touré and Bibby also struck from long range, tying the game at 10. With the score level, both teams fought to impose their rhythm, turning the game into a constant exchange of baskets (points from Lundquist, Bibby, and Pierre-Louis, 15-15) until a three-pointer from Chloe and a basket from Pierre put Spar Girona ahead (20-15). Still, Buenavida scored at the buzzer, closing the first quarter at 20-17.

Awa Fam took advantage of her physical superiority to score two consecutive baskets and put Gernika ahead (20-21). However, the visitors’ lead was short-lived as Pierre scored, followed by two three-pointers from Bibby, who reached 16 points in the game (28-21). Despite Gernika’s timeout, Uni found gaps in the opponent’s defense and extended their lead with baskets from Canella and Guerrero (34-23). Even so, Gernika’s persistence paid off, forcing Roberto Íñiguez to call a timeout after points from Westerik and Dodson inside the paint (34-27). The adjustments worked, and Guerrero nailed a three-pointer and a field goal to put Spar Girona up by 12 (Carolina with 9 points, 39-27). In the final stretch of the quarter, another timeout was called, Bibby reached 18 points, but Ariztimuño answered with a two-pointer (41-29). Roberto Íñiguez then designed a final play for Bibby, who did not miss, but Awa Fam responded to set the halftime score at 43-31.

Despite the quarter change, Spar Girona kept working hard to extend their lead, significantly improving their defense and capitalizing inside the paint through Canella and Klara (50-35). As the minutes passed, the game stalled offensively, prompting the visiting coach to call a timeout. This pause reignited Uni, who punished their opponent with baskets from Caldwell, a three-pointer from Touré, and a shot from Guerrero, pushing the lead to +20 (57-37). From then on, both teams exchanged baskets, maintaining the score gap (points from Carol and Caldwell, 61-41).

With 10 minutes left, Gernika increased their intensity in search of a comeback at Fontajau, with baskets from Westerik, Fam, and Chery, cutting the deficit to 15 points (62-47). Uni attempted to react with a timeout, but the visitors’ defense continued to force passing errors while capitalizing on offensive rebounds to get closer (points from Buenavida, Westerik, and a 2+1 from Buenavida, 62-54). Finally, after relentless effort, Bibby scored inside, and despite Chery’s answer, Touré struck from three-point range (67-56). Gernika leaned on Fam to cut the difference (67-60), but Bibby hit a key shot to give Spar some breathing room (69-60). With possession for Uni, Roberto Íñiguez called a timeout at 52.2 seconds remaining, and Caldwell and Lundquist sealed the win from the free-throw line (73-62).
