UNI GETS THE FIRST TRIUMPH OF 2025

A hard-fought victory for Spar Girona in Vigo to certify the first of the year. After a complicated start, where Celta’s defense went over the top, a spectacular second quarter by Hristova turned the dynamics of the match upside down (28-32 at halftime). Uni’s good streak continued in the second half, breaking the tie two minutes from the end of the third quarter (39-59) to end up winning with a resounding 52 to 83. Hristova and Bibby were the top scorers of the match with 20 points each.

From more to less

With the start of the match marked by an exchange of shots in which both teams played their cards to prevail from a good start (points from Lundquist and Bibby, 4-5), it was Celta who took the reins with a 7-0 run, led by Cooper and two baskets from Haidara, standing out for their defensive dominance and control of the offensive rebound (11-5). Little by little, Spar Girona reacted, improving in defense and scoring thanks to Touré and Bibby to get closer to the score (13-11). However, the joy was short-lived, as Celta again widened the gap with two consecutive baskets from Samson (17-11). Despite the timeout requested by Roberto, the Galicians maintained a solid defensive block and extended the advantage with a new basket from Haidara (19-11).

15 points from Hristova

The change of quarter did not improve the image of Spar Girona. In fact, Tadic extended the difference to +10, while the intense defensive pressure of Celta stopped the Girona team in its tracks, causing the ninth turnover just at the start of the second half (21-11). As the minutes passed, both teams stalled in attack, until Hristova, from long range, broke the scoring drought (21-14). Cristina Cantero reacted quickly with a timeout, but Hristova maintained her good momentum and led a spectacular comeback, scoring 13 consecutive points to put Spar Girona ahead on the scoreboard (23-24). Tadic responded with a three-pointer to give Celta the lead back, but Spar Girona’s upward momentum did not stop: Ygueravide scored from the free throw line and Hristova certified her fifteenth point, making it 26-30. After the local timeout, Samson closed the gap for the Galicians, but an assist from Ygueravide made it 28-32 at halftime.

11 to 27 and judgment

Tadic’s opening basket did not intimidate Spar Girona, as Hristova quickly responded with her fourth triple of the match. Bibby and Guerrero then scored two consecutive points that extended the Girona team’s lead (30-39). Uni’s good momentum was maintained thanks to a three-pointer by Bibby and successful offensive actions by Guerrero, Lundquist and Touré, who consolidated a more comfortable margin on the scoreboard (37-50). Haidara scored for Celta to try to keep them in the match, but a three-pointer by Lundquist and a spectacular point by Touré, who missed the overtime, ended up breaking the match for good (39-59).
